About Rummelsberg Hospital
Since the beginning of 2019, Patient Journey App has been deployed across one of the largest orthopaedic clinics in Germany. The app accompanies and informs patients receiving a hip or knee prosthesis. Rummelsberg hospital, under the sponsorship of Sana Kliniken AG, is a renowned specialist hospital for orthopedics and trauma surgery, neurology, internal medicine and geriatric rehabilitation. There are six orthopaedic clinics within the specialist hospital alone.
In this case study we speak with Dr. Dominik Kranzer about his view on the recent introduction of Patient Journey App at Rummelsberg Hospital.
For Dr. Kranzer, one of the most difficult things for surgical orthopaedic teams is to ensure patients are fit enough to prepare, undergo and recover from orthopaedic surgery. Kranzer explains that "For patients to truly benefit from the complex surgeries we perform, rapid mobilisation is very important." Indeed, the success of such interventions can only be achieved if patients comply with the advice and exercises provided by their physiotherapy team. For Dr. Kranzer "The app encourages patients to stay on the ball with their exercises, thus helping them along with their recovery. Patients can retrieve all the important information they need to know about their surgery on their smartphone or tablet, anytime and anyplace."
For Dr. Kranzer the app has seriously improved the level of patient care and compliance at the hospital. "The application is a reliable companion - before, during and after the operation. We see a huge added value for the patient. Soft skills are becoming increasingly important in the healthcare sector". Dr. Kranzer now looks to the future as to where else the app might be able to help patients. "We are already looking to extend this concept to other treatment areas. Other hospitals within the Sana group are also becoming aware of our app, which is great".
According to Dr. Kranzer, "The app is well structured, intuitive to use and personalized for the patient". Regular push notifications inform patients of what they need to do to prepare for surgery (i.e start fasting), as well as what to take care of afterwards (i.e useful post op exercises). "The app encourages the patient to become active as they are given a little reminder now and then" says Dr. Kranzer. "Thanks to the app we get instant feedback from the patient in terms of whether or not they understand the process ahead of them. In this respect, the app really does make everyday work easier." Asked whether apps in hospitals will become more common in the future, Dominik Kranzer answers "High-quality apps are certainly a competitive advantage in the healthcare industry. I am convinced that other clinics will follow our example in the coming months and years. The demands of patients grow everyday, and it is no longer just about excellent care"
Patient Journey App allows health care professionals to update their patients with the right information at the right time. Through interactive push notifications patients are informed, activated and empowered about the next steps in their treatment pathway. The apps we have created are used by 100+ hospitals and clinics, across 20 countries by more than 100,000 patients.
