Miss Samantha Tross is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in London specialising in conditions of the lower limb, specifically hip and knee preserving and replacement surgery. She is the first female Consultant of Afro-Caribbean descent in the UK and one of 5% of female Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeons practicing in the UK. She is a member of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh.
After becoming a patient herself, Dr. Samantha Tross experienced firsthand how overwhelming patient information can be. Soon after, she decided that she wanted her patients to be presented with all the information they need, when they need it.
"I had to have spinal surgery. I received all of the information in the form of a booklet, and there was loads of paper to read through. Whilst I was happy with the depth of information I received, I didn't like the way it was presented. And so I thought it'd be good if I could get rid of paper and replace it with an app. The app means that anywhere you are and at anytime you can quickly get it up on your phone and refresh your memory, whereas you can't walk around with a huge booklet!"
The vision behind the app was to replace large walls of text with clear messages and instructive videos. Another goal was to ensure patients receive several notifications following their first consultation so that they can process their diagnosis, and review their treatment options. This came about as Samantha told us: “When speaking with a patient they're often stressed and the majority of what you tell them goes in one ear and out the other. In a twenty minutes consultation you've got to take down a history, examine the patient, provide treatment options, and it's difficult to get through all of that information at once"
The result is that patients at Dr. Tross' practice are now more informed, and more prepared for their surgery. "Since giving patients the app, they do come for the pre-assessment with less questions. Instead of spending a lot of time with the patient answering all of these different queries, many of these questions are now answered by the app".
