Samantha Tross is an orthopedic consultant surgeon in London. She specializes in conditions of the lower limbs, particularly hip and knee preservation and replacement surgery. She is the first female consultant of Afro-Caribbean descent in the UK and one of the 5% of female orthopedic consultant surgeons in the UK. She is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in England and Edinburgh.
The challenge
After Dr. Samantha Tross herself became a patient, she experienced how overwhelming all the information can be that patients receive. She therefore decided that she wanted to provide all her patients with the important information they need at the right time.
"I had to undergo a spinal operation and received all the information in the form of a booklet. There was a lot of paper to read through. While I was pleased with the relevant information I received, I didn’t like the way it was presented. That’s why I wanted to replace all the paper with an app. With an app, you can look at the information on your phone anywhere and anytime, rather than having to carry around a paper booklet."
The solution
The vision behind the app was to replace long texts with clear messages and instructional videos. Additionally, with Patient Journey App, we aimed to provide patients with information about their diagnosis and treatment options through various notifications after their initial consultation. Samantha tells us: "When you speak with a patient, they are often stressed, and most of what you say goes in one ear and out the other. In a twenty-minute consultation, you need to discuss the patient’s medical history, examine the patient, and present various treatment options. It’s difficult to share and receive all this information at once."
The practical result for Dr. Tross is that patients are now better informed and prepared for surgery. "Since we started offering Patient Journey App, patients come with fewer questions. Instead of spending a lot of time answering these questions, many of them are now addressed by the app."
